Tim Ho Wan Asian Delight
Hey guys, Ben here, and this time were taking somecornyfoodpun international.
Myself, and a friend of mine (Pranav) went to visit Hong Kong, so I decided to take the opportunity as a nationally acclaimed food blogger to check out one of the best value for money dumpling places. Tim Ho Wan. If you ever find yourself in Hong Kong I would 100% recommend checking it out and here’s why.
First of all, we shall start with the outside of the building, Tim Ho Wan is located at Olympic in Hong Kong outside the shopping mall. Olympic is quite easily accessible with it being close to one of the major thoroughfares in Nathan road and having an MTR stop close by as well. The appearance of the store is not that of a high quality and looks rather low key but the magic happens inside the restaurant. Enter through the big white glass doors into this fast-paced yet relaxing scenery where the foods smell almost rivals its taste.
The menu consists of about 33 items each being different from the last and offers a wide variety of flavours. One of the most famous parts about the restaurant was it was awarded a Michelin star but still is really good value for money regardless. The menu is a small yellow pamphlet which is an odd twist but means that service and language barriers are a lot better. If you look below you will see the prices are in Hong Kong Dollars. While we were there the value of 5 HKD was 1 AUD so keep that in mind when looking at the prices.
Now we get onto presentation and speed. The order process itself took us longer than for the food to get ready. Hong Kong is known for its fast service where all of our food was on the table within 5 minutes of ordering which was a pleasant surprise. On top of that, the presentation was simplistic and effective highlighting the flavours of the dish.
I ended up getting 2 steamed dumplings in Chiu Chow sauce, and the baked bun with BBQ pork which ended up costing $52 HKD or approximately $10 AUD. The steamed dumplings were delicious, they combined beef and vegetables in a really nice array of flavours while the dumpling skin melted in your mouth as you took a bite. THE MAIN ATTRACTION HAS TO BE THE BAKED BUN, not only was it well cooked and oozed flavour from the first bite but it had a sweetness to it that really created a magical flavour experience. The texture was still crunchy even though there was the warm liquid from the beef and overall it was probably my favourite dish. Definitely worth a 10/10 rating.
Pranav ordered 1 deep fried dumpling filled with pork, 1 steamed beef bun with satay paste, and 1 steamed pork dumpling. We both shared meals to fully experience the flavour but I found the steamed bun was probably my second favourite dish as the bun was well cooked but still chewy, and just dissipated on the tongue like fairy floss. The deep-fried pork dumpling was also very interesting being such a unique flavour, the crispy goldarn goodness mixed with the soft interior created an interesting first bite that is unparalleled by anything I have eaten before. Lastly. The steamed pork dumplings were super flavourful but unfortunately lacked seasoning which was the one demise of the disk. His meal valued at $68 HKD which is about $14 AUD.
Overall, the quality of the food was superb for the price and we could tell the quality level of the food despite the Michelin star. I would highly recommend anyone visiting Hong Kong to check it out as the food there is extraordinary for the price. Overall rating would be a 9/10
